The Guy Harvey Ocean Foundation and Guy Harvey Research institute made their way to Tropic Star Lodge in Panama to launch an exciting new investigation on the habitat distribution of Pacific billfish as part of the Eastern Tropical Pacific Seascape (ETPS) Research Program led by Ph.D. student, Ryan Logan. Over two weeks, the team tagged 10 blue marlin, 10 sailfish and one black marlin with PAT (pop-off archival transmitting) tags. Additionally, Wess Merten from the GHOF-funded Dolphinfish Research Program (DRP) joined the team and worked with anglers to deploy over 200 conventional tags on dolphinfish, many in the 30 – 50 lb. range. A PAT tag was also deployed on a mature dolphinfish which has popped off providing invaluable data on the fish’s movements. Given the tremendous success of the dolphin tagging in Panama, and the current lack of data on the species, the GHOF is now expanding the ETPS study to include dolphinfish as a species of interest. Jessica Harvey, GHOF Project Manager and Guy’s daughter, eagerly took to the water to capture the action sub-surface throughout the expedition!
