Redfish are referred to by a variety of names, including Red Drum, Channel Bass and Bull Red. Found in the western Atlantic from Maine to the Gulf of Mexico, the redfish often schools in or around sandy and muddy bottoms in shallow water. It is a hard fighter and is also known for its fine eating qualities. The popularity of New Orleans' dish "blackened redfish" led to overfishing, and eventually protective measures to help support Redfish populations. Redfish coloration can vary widely, and is often dependent on the location in which it was landed. In addition, the spot pattern is unique to each individual fish.
